Nuts & Bolts by Chris Mosley

Here we are, once again at the end of another long season. And yet, it seems like “we’ve only just begun”. My apologies to the Carpenters for borrowing their song title.

A quick recap of the 2013 season:

The 2013 season started with the March Lion Drivers School. This year we had over 30 new drivers attending and earning their novice licenses.

The twelve hour at NJMP was a great success and looks to keep on growing in popularity. This year the teams were more prepared and much more professional in their approach to the event. Look for next year’s event to be even better

The regular racing season got off to a shaky start at the “new” Pocono road course (which by the way, is a wonderful new addition to the Northeast racing scene) back in May. Unfortunately the turnout was light and NNJR took a significant financial hit to start the year. For those of you who didn’t make the race you missed a chance to drive on a new and exciting track. If you go to the NNJR web site you can still take a ride on the track from the seat of my Porsche Cayman.

The June and August regionals at NJMP were well attended and successful for the JRB(NNJR & SJR).

The season ending JRRC (or the JERK as it commonly called) was a resounding success. With great weather (65 and sunny on Sunday in the middle of October) and a large car turnout (over 150 entries) it was one of the best events of the year. The icing on the cake was watching one of only six remaining B-17’s taking off and landing at Millville airport during the course of the weekend.

The solo program ran more than twelve events this year and actually had to turn cars away several times as they were over booked. The solo program continues to grow in popularity. It will be back next year at the Meadowlands.

The rally program ran several rallies which were lightly attended. There is still one more to be run on December 8th. This is the “Teddy Bear Rally”. Pease contact Fred Cochran our rally chair for more information.

So that’s 2013 in a nut shell.

2014 will see some major changes. The events will be the same but the status of the events will change. Earlier this year in my column I talked about the Majors program and the changes to National and Regional racing. In 2014 there will be the Majors (Super National Racing) and all other racing. Running the Majors will be one way to earn an invitation to the SCCA Runoffs. While national racing as we once knew it is gone. It will be replaced by Divisional racing. There will be a new Divisional Race Series that will crown a Divisional Champion in each class (current regional and national classes) and the top three drivers in each (nationally recognized class) class will earn an invitation to the SCCA Runoffs. The series will run at all of the major northeast tracks (Watkins Glen, NHIS, NJMP, Nelson Ledges, Pittsburg, Summit Point, Pocono and possibly Lime Rock). If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me to discuss them.

The Runoff’s themselves are changing also. This year’s Runoff’s was the last one to held at Road America. For the next three years the SCCA Runoffs will hit the road. In 2014 the Runoffs will be held at Laguna Seca. In 2015 they will visit Daytona and 2016 will see the Runoffs return to Mid-Ohio.

I would like to apologize to our members on behalf of the Board of the NNJR-SCCA for the missing editions of the Pole Position. The Board made a decision earlier this year to make changes to the publication and unfortunately it has been a difficult process. We are making progress and we will be putting the publication on line on our NNJR site for all of our members. We intend to open up a blog and a forum on the NNJR site so our members can actively participate in NNJR events.

We are looking for a few good people to volunteer to help at any and all events to held by NNJR during the upcoming year. We will train you and help you to be the best you can be. We’ll even throw in a good meal along the way. So come out and support your club.
