Happy New Years to all. It’s the start of a brand new year. Did you know that the celebration of New Year’s Day (or New Year’s eve to be exact) on the first of January is a relatively new experience. According to Wikipedia the practice of celebrating New Year’s Day on January 1st began around the year 1751. Prior to then New Year’s was celebrated for thousands of years in February or March, much closer to the first day of spring than the new calendar year. Given a choice, I think the thousands of people who go to Times Square to celebrate the countdown to the new year would prefer March 31 as it would probably be a much warmer experience.

Pocono, it has finally been decided that the Mother’s Day event at Pocono will be on the calendar for 2014. There has been a lot of back and forth as to whether we would be going back there this year. The event will be run by a combination of regions this year. Most likely at this juncture, NEPA, SJR and NNJR.

As you know the track was completely resurfaced last year and a new track layout was used for the Mother’s Day event. Many drivers were complimentary about the new layout and the work that had been done at the track. There were some minor issues in that first weekend as the track owners were scrambling to finish up some of the new buildings and other items. There were also some parking issues as we were not allowed to use either the NASCAR area or the outfield as they were trying to protect the newly paved racing surfaces out there.

I have spoken with Stephen Sodl about some of these issues and have been assured that these have been fixed. New for this year, we will be able to use all of the garage areas for paddock parking. The NASCAR garages that had been previously off limit will now be open for our use as well as the paved areas around those garages. There should be no parking issues this year. Also, all new building construction will be completed before our arrival. The owners and managers of Pocono Raceway have spent millions to improve the track and the grounds. Please plan on joining us at the Joe DeLuca and Linda Gronlund Freedom Races at the all new Pocono Raceway on May 10 and 11.

With so many regions and so many new tracks opening up around the northeast the current corp of volunteers cannot keep up with the demand. We’re not asking for you to give up your life, just a weekend here or there. Even if you can only give a day. Your help would be appreciated so much. We’ll feed you, train you introduce you to some great folks and make sure you have an incredible day!
